Sallah adds published researcher to resume ✍️
Stephen Decatur High School senior Regine “Gigi” Sallah has a smile for days and now quite a decorated resume to go along with it.
Having endured several oral surgeries growing up, Sallah is committed to forging a career in oral maxillofacial (mouth) surgery, but this past summer, she took her first professional steps in the medical field studying a different part of the face – the eyes.
Sallah spent six weeks at the University of Oxford as a student researcher in oculomics, the study of genetic biomarkers in the eyes that reflect systemic disease. Her time culminated in a published study, “Systemic Disease Screening: Using Deep Learning Analysis of Retinal Images (Oculomics): A Review,” complete with her name as one of the authors.
During her time researching at the prestigious university, Sallah was actively engaged in analyzing the digital images of the cornea of study participants and using artificial intelligence to detect and diagnose health issues. While oculomics remains a relatively new method for health screening, Sallah’s study shows the promise for its use as a method for clinical screening and monitoring disease risk.
No stranger to challenging academics, Sallah will graduate high school with seven Advanced Placement and a handful of dual enrollment courses. She is also the member of several honor societies and clubs, serving as President for both the Science National Honor Society and the Students Against Destructive Decisions club.
Her current plans following high school are to major in Global Health at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, a higher education institution in the Netherlands, where she maintains one of three national citizenships.

An excellent two days for members of our Students Against Destructive Decisions at the Youth Ambassador Retreat held at Assateague Island State Park. Many thanks to our Worcester County Health Department for conducting informational sessions on substance abuse and to Salisbury University communication students for sharing their leadership skills with us. This experience gave our students more knowledge and greater confidence to lead awareness campaigns in our communities. And - an awesome cornhole set, hand painted by our students, topped off the two days!
