Oprah Winfrey is a renowned media executive, talk show host, actress, and philanthropist. After facing significant hardships in her early life, including poverty and abuse, she earned a scholarship to Tennessee State University, where she studied communications. Her career began in local media, but her breakthrough came when she became the host of a Chicago morning talk show, which eventually evolved into world renowned “The Oprah Winfrey Show” which aired for 25 years. The show became a cultural phenomenon, known for its intimate interviews, heartfelt discussions, and the promotion of self-improvement. Oprah’s ability to connect with her audience and tackle tough topics, such as abuse, race, and mental health, helped to bring these issues into mainstream conversation. Her influence extended beyond television; she launched her own production company, Harpo Productions, and became a powerful figure in publishing, film, and philanthropy. She broke racial and gender barriers in television and media. Winfrey has used her platform to address critical social issues, promote education, and empower marginalized communities. Through her philanthropic efforts, including the establishment of the Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Operating Foundation, she has funded various initiatives aimed at improving education for underprivileged youth. Overall, Oprah Winfrey’s legacy is one of empowerment, resilience, and a commitment to making a positive impact on society. She has not only transformed the landscape of media but has also paved the way for future generations of black leaders and change-makers. She has advocated for fair labor practices and has inspired many in the workforce to pursue their dreams and advocate for their rights. Her legacy continues to influence future generations in both media and social activism.

Mathematician Dr. Gladys West is known for her pioneering work in the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). She labored as a mathematician and programmer at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, where she worked with computers to map the exact shape of the Earth using math and satellite data which became essential for modern GPS technology. Though her contributions were not widely recognized for many years, she gained recognition later in life for her groundbreaking work and was inducted into the U.S. Air Force Hall of Fame in 2018. Her research made it possible for GPS to be as precise as it is today. Thanks to her contribution, we can easily find directions and track locations worldwide. #AfricanAmericansandLabor

Black Wall Street refers to the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a thriving African American community in the early 1900’s. It was founded by O.W. Gurley, a wealthy black landowner who purchased 40 acres of land and designated it exclusively for Black residents and businesses. Gurley provided loans to black entrepreneurs, fostering economic growth. Black Wall Street became one of the wealthiest black communities in the U.S., home to successful businesses, banks, restaurants, and cultural institutions. However, on May 31–June 1, 1921, it was destroyed in the Tulsa Race Massacre when a mob, fueled by racial tensions and false accusations, attacked the district. Hundreds of black residents were killed, thousands were left homeless, and businesses were burned to the ground. Despite the devastation, many residents rebuilt, though the community never fully regained its former prosperity due to systemic racism and economic oppression. Today, Black Wall Street stands as a symbol of black economic success and resilience, with ongoing efforts to preserve its history and honor its legacy. #AfricanAmericansandLabor

Claudette Colvin is a civil rights pioneer who, at just 15 years old, refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 2, 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks' more famous act of defiance. Colvin was arrested and became one of the first people to challenge bus segregation in court. She was a plaintiff in Browder v. Gayle, the case that ultimately led to the Supreme Court ruling that Montgomery's bus segregation laws were unconstitutional. Despite her bravery, Colvin's story was largely overshadowed by Parks', partly because civil rights leaders at the time felt Colvin, a teenager from a working-class background, was not the ideal face for the movement. However, in recent years, she has gained more recognition for her crucial role in the fight for racial justice. #AfricanAmericansandLabor

When Henrietta Lacks was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital, she had no idea that cells from her biopsied tumor would be deemed immortal, capable of surviving and reproducing indefinitely in a laboratory. Without her knowledge or consent, doctors took a sample of her cervical cancer cells, which were later cultured by George Otto Gey, leading to the creation of the HeLa cell line. These cells became the first human cells to continuously grow and divide outside the body, enabling groundbreaking discoveries in medicine. HeLa cells contributed to the development of the polio vaccine, advancements in cancer research, AIDS treatment, cloning, and in vitro fertilization, and they continue to provide invaluable medical data today. Although some researchers were aware of HeLa cells’ origins before 1970, Henrietta Lacks' family did not learn about their existence until 1975. Despite the HeLa cell line becoming a multi-billion-dollar industry, her family never received any financial compensation. Few individuals in medical history have contributed to saving as many lives as Henrietta Lacks. #AfricanAmericansandLabor

Josephine Holloway was determined to bring the Girl Scout experience to girls at a local women’s shelter, and in 1924, she made that vision a reality. By the end of the year, more than 300 girls were participating in Girl Scout-inspired activities. Nearly a decade later, in 1933, she took her first steps toward forming an official troop for African American girls. However, her request was initially denied. But perseverance is at the heart of Girl Scouting, and Josephine refused to give up. In 1942, after years of dedication, she successfully established the region’s first African American Girl Scout troop. With decades of experience advocating for girls, including attending a training led by Juliette Gordon Low (founder) herself, Josephine became a respected community leader and an expert on girls’ development. She was later hired as a field advisor for Black troops, a role in which she remained until her retirement in 1963. During her tenure, she supported and supervised more than 2,000 African American girls and adults. Today, Camp Holloway stands in her honor as a place where girls of all races, religions, and backgrounds come together to build friendships, explore, and experience the power of learning and leading as one. #AfricanAmericansandLabor
