An HBCU (Historically Black College or University) is a college or university that was established before 1964 with the primary mission of educating Black Americans. These institutions were founded during a time when racial segregation prevented Black students from attending most predominantly white institutions (PWIs).
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the oldest HBCU in the United States, was founded in 1837 by Richard Humphreys, a wealthy Quaker philanthropist. He established the school with a $10,000 endowment to provide education and training for African Americans. Originally named the Institute for Colored Youth (ICY), the school focused on preparing Black students for teaching and other skilled professions.
Over the years, it evolved into Cheyney University and became a public university in Pennsylvania’s state system. It remains a significant institution in HBCU history and African American education.
While HBCUs were originally created for Black students, they are open to students of all races today. Many offer strong academic programs, particularly in STEM, business, and the arts.

Keeping up with our exploration of African Americans and Labor, Garrett Morgan was an inventor and entrepreneur known for his three-way traffic signal and gas mask. In 1923 he created a three-position signal to improve road safety which became the basis for modern traffic lights. He later sold the patent to General Electric. He also invented the safety hood, a precursor to gas masks used by firefighters and rescue workers in World War I. Morgan was also a successful businessman and advocate for the rights of black people.

Sticking with our exploration of African Americans and Labor, today we’re celebrating Benjamin Banneker, a brilliant self-taught mathematician, astronomer, surveyor and inventor. He is best known for his almanacs, which contained astronomical calculations, weather predictions, and other useful information. Banneker was appointed as part of the surveying team to help design Washington, D.C. He worked alongside Pierre Charles L’Enfant and Andrew Ellicott, contributing his expertise in mapping and land measurement. When L’Enfant abruptly left the project, Banneker reportedly recreated the city’s plans from memory.
Despite limited formal education, he excelled in science and engineering, even building a working wooden clock that kept accurate time for decades. He was also an outspoken advocate against slavery, writing to Thomas Jefferson to challenge his views on race and equality.

Building on our theme of African Americans and Labor, Lewis Latimer was an inventor, engineer, and draftsman who made significant contributions to the development of the light bulb and telephone. Born to formerly enslaved parents, Latimer worked with some of the greatest inventors of his time. He improved carbon filament technology, making light bulbs more practical and longer-lasting. He also worked closely with Alexander Graham Bell, helping draft the patent for the telephone. Later, he joined Thomas Edison's team and played a key role in expanding electric lighting.
Beyond inventions, Latimer was a patent expert, author, and advocate for Black engineers, leaving a lasting impact on technology and innovation.
