SHHS wants to help STOP this cycle! We have partnered with Got Your Back Defense to offer a GIRLS ONLY Self-Defense Class. Registration is open to the first 30 girls to join! Mrs. Tekeisha Dennis is a proud graduate of Snow Hill High School who currently serves as the Community School Liaison at Pocomoke Middle School. She obtained a Bachelor and Master of Social Work. She prides herself in being a wife and mother of two sons and being a part of the "Phirst" African American Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha INC. 💕💚. In her spare time loves to shop, spend time with family, journal and write poetry. She recently wrote a chapter in a book called "Broken Promises," along with other females who shared transparent stories. (Go get your copy!)

Mrs. Rachel Watson is a Senior Cosmetologist/Licensed Educator who serves as an instructor at Worcester Technical High School. She has 48 years of experience in the industry and has spent 38 of them teaching. She also holds a master’s degree in Secondary Education.
“When considering all of my accomplishments, I believe my greatest contributions in education has been working as a teacher, building a professional learning environment where students will become licensed and go out into a salon and embark on a world of real-life experiences. The biggest joy in teaching comes when I look into the face of a student and watch confusion turn into concentration, then concentration to surprise, and finally, surprise into the pride of accomplishment.”

Spotlighting accomplished African American educators in Worcester County was not only an opportunity to celebrate their achievements but also a chance to acknowledge the invaluable contributions they've made to education and their communities. By showcasing their stories, we honored their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to empowering students of all backgrounds. Their experiences and words of inspiration serve as guiding lights, showing that with determination, hard work, and belief in oneself, anything is possible.
As our last honoree, today we celebrate Dr. Lavonya Dashiell. Dr. Dashiell has been an educator for 24 years as a first-grade teacher, third grade teacher, Curriculum Resource Teacher, and currently, Assistant Principal at SHMS. Lavonya obtained her bachelor's degree from Salisbury University and both a Masters and Doctorate degree from Wilmington University.
"I was inspired to be a teacher as young child after I read the autobiography of Mary McCleod Bethune, an educator and civil rights activist. She opened a private school for African Americans which was a very bold move for her time. I have always wanted to see people succeed, especially when they become solid readers. My advice to any young person would be to read and take every opportunity to learn as much as you can. There is power in knowledge. Once you learn something, no one can take it from you."

Ms. Denee Bowen is a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School who is now in her 21st year of service at Pocomoke Middle School. The first 17 years were spent as a Special Education teacher. The last four have been in the role of School Counselor. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a masters in School Counseling from Wilmington University.
“Becoming a special education teacher was a natural choice for me, inspired by a family member with special needs. Witnessing his journey sparked a profound sense of empathy and a desire to contribute positively to the lives of others facing similar challenges. My advice to students would be: Don’t just wish for it, work for it. Education is not just about grades; it’s a journey of self-discovery & growth. Take advantage of every opportunity, put in the work, be resilient in the face of challenges and remember the skills you develop and lessons you learn are valuable.”
A group of 9th graders had the opportunity to visit Barnes and Noble today to explore the wonders held inside a bookstore. Thanks to the Hertrich’s Cash for Class grant, each student was able to purchase several novels to take home with them. Ms. Zena Tunnell is a Special Education Teacher at Stephen Decatur High School. She has been teaching for 15 years. She graduated from Salisbury University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Middle School Math, Grades 6-8. She received a master's degree in Special Education from Wilmington University and, additionally, has earned 30+ credits in master level reading courses.
“I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I originally wanted to be a middle school math teacher, but during my student teaching, Maureen Capelli, a special education teacher, observed me in the classroom, and told me I had a special gift because not everyone has the patience to work with struggling learners. I took the special education praxis and that same year I was offered a position at Stephen Decatur High School. My advice to students would be to set goals for what you want and be ready to take the necessary steps to get yourself there!”
Recently our Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competed against thirteen other schools from across Maryland’s Third Region. Six of our fifteen members have qualified to compete this spring at the State Leadership Conference in Ocean City.
