After the final bell today, our Surfrider Club swapped backpacks for buckets and hit the beach for another clean-up. ☀️
In just a couple of hours, we turned trash into treasure (okay…mostly just trash 😅), but every piece we picked up means a cleaner ocean and happier marine life. 🐚
Just saving the planet, one bottle cap at a time—no big deal. ❤️🌊🌎

Stephen Decatur High School student-athletes Kennedy Kirby 🥍 and Amelia Gonzalez 🤼♀️, along with Athletic Director Dan Dobronz, teamed up with their southern-end peers from Snow Hill and Pocomoke at the 2nd annual Bayside Student-Athlete Leadership Conference today.
Together, they built connections, strengthened their leadership skills, and represented the true spirit of sportsmanship, showing that leadership extends far beyond the field, court, and mat. Proud of these #Seahawks for setting the standard and leading the way for the next generation.

Seahawks Soar into the Real World through the Community Internship Program 🛩️✨
At Stephen Decatur High School, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. It steps boldly into the real world.
While Stephen Decatur has many academically rigorous pathways including Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement, the school’s Community Internship Program is transforming the way students think about education, careers, and their place in the world. Designed to bridge the gap between academics and hands-on experience, the program places students directly into local businesses, organizations, and professional environments where they can explore their passions in meaningful, tangible ways.
For many students, the internship program is their first glimpse into life beyond high school, and it’s nothing short of eye-opening. For senior Sydney Wade, who is interning at Showell Elementary School, “learning firsthand in a professional environment is something that you can’t get from a classroom.” Wade, who works with kindergarten teacher Elizabeth Adkins, has truly enjoyed working with the students and witnessing their academic growth. She may even someday bring her enthusiasm and teaching talents back to Worcester County.
For senior Hayden Hambury, that experience is happening thousands of feet above the ground. Through a partnership with Ocean Aviation in West Ocean City, Hayden is working toward earning his pilot’s license, an opportunity that turns ambition into action every time he steps onto the runway. What began as an interest in planes and auto mechanics is quickly becoming a defined career path, fueled by hands-on training and real-world exposure. Hambury, who took his first solo flight during his internship, aspires to become a commercial airline pilot. Now, he’s literally flying toward that goal.
Hambury and Wade’s experiences are just a few examples of the program’s incredible range. Other students are making an impact, and discovering their own futures, in a variety of settings throughout the community. Some, like Wade, in school classrooms, gaining firsthand experience in education and mentorship. Others are interning in medical centers, law offices, and physical therapy clinics, observing professionals and building foundational skills in high-demand fields. Still others are exploring careers in the trades and wellness industries, working alongside HVAC or plumbing companies, or supporting operations at local gyms and recreation centers. Each placement reflects a student’s individual interests, while offering meaningful opportunities to grow, contribute, and learn.
Community partners, too, play a vital role in the program’s success. By opening their doors to student interns, local organizations are investing in the next generation while benefiting from fresh perspectives and youthful energy. It’s a partnership that strengthens the entire community.
According to advisor Mary Berquist, what makes the Community Internship Program especially powerful “is its ability to spark self-discovery.” Some students confirm long-held career aspirations, while others uncover new interests they had never considered before. “In either case, the experience provides clarity and direction at a critical point in their lives,” Berquist says.
As education continues to evolve, opportunities like the Community Internship Program allow students to make meaningful, real-world connections. As they explore the professional world and, like Hambury, literally soar within it, learning becomes especially impactful because it’s active, relevant, and connected to the workforce beyond the school walls.
At Stephen Decatur High School, the message is clear: the future isn’t something students wait for. It’s something they can start building, or flying toward, today. 💙🖤🤍

It was an “egg-cellent” day, and we are super thankful for the spring vibes, our friendly colleagues, and our spectacular social committee for sponsoring another fun and generous faculty egg hunt! We will definitely be visiting some local businesses with our gift cards. We weren’t worrying today- we were “hoppy!” 😁🌸

Our “Take Down Tobacco” campaign was a BLOOMING success! ✨🌺
A huge shoutout to our incredible Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) for leading the charge and making a real impact! Hundreds of Seahawks stepped up and pledged to “LEI” off smoking and vaping, now that’s something to celebrate! 🙌
With colorful leis generously provided by the Worcester County Health Department, (funding provided by the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund), our hallways were filled with positivity, pride, and a whole lot of island vibes. 🌴
It’s inspiring to see our school community come together to make healthy choices and support one another. Things are definitely looking bright, and flowery, around here! 🌼
