✨ SHMS Celebrates Black History Month! ✨ This February, we honor the incredible legacy of African American leaders who have shaped our history. Today, we recognize Fannie W. Birckhead, a Snow Hill, MD native and trailblazing community leader. 🌟✊🏾 Birckhead challenged the all-white Worcester County Commission, helping elect the first Black County Commissioner. In 1998, she made history as the first Black woman mayor on the Eastern Shore and later became Worcester County’s first Black Orphan’s Court Judge. Today, we recognize Judy Johnson—a Snow Hill, MD native and legendary third baseman of the Negro Leagues. ⚾💪🏾 Johnson led Hilldale to three pennants (1921–1929) and a 1925 Negro World Series title, later playing for the Grays and Crawfords. In 1954, he made history as one of MLB’s first Black coaches with the Athletics and later became a scout. His impact on baseball earned him a place in the Hall of Fame in 1975. 🏆🔥 📌 Stay tuned as we continue to spotlight local African American trailblazers who have left a lasting mark on our community.
